Wolin Gate, Kamien Pomorski - Kamien Pomorski

Wolin Gate, Kamien Pomorski

The Wolin Gate

Erected in the mid-14th century, the Wolin Gate was part of the secular town fortifications, protecting it against an attack from the south and from the banks of the Dziwna River. It was altered twice, first in 1691 and then in the 19th century and re-built after WWII. You can now climb the tower to see the panorama of the area.

St. Nicholas' Church, Kamien Pomorski - Kamien Pomorski

St. Nicholas' Church, Kamien Pomorski

St. Nicholas' Church

The hill that St. Nicholas' Church sits on is an ancient pagan burial ground and the church, which is first mentioned in written records in 1335, was at first just a chapel with a graveyard around it. The church, then Protestant, got its interesting tower in the 17th century.
After WWII the place was to be adapted to become a local museum but finally in 1994 it was taken over by the Catholic Church. Parts of its ancient altar can now be found in the cathedral. The church was closed so we couldn' t see it inside.

Facade of the Bishop's Palace, Kamien Pomorski - Kamien Pomorski

Facade of the Bishop's Palace, Kamien Pomorski

The Bishop's Palace

The Bishop's Palace is situated within what used to be the church town, where the clergy and all the church officials had their houses depending on their place in the church hierarchy. The bishop's position was obviously the highest so the house he occupied was the grandest. I found the facade with the tracery of particular interest but the whole building is worth a visit. After WWII it housed the county library. In 1993 it reverted to the parish.

Directions: Opposite the cathedral

Town Hall, Kamien Pomorski - Kamien Pomorski

Town Hall, Kamien Pomorski

The Town Hall

The Gothic Town Hall was built in the centre of the Old Town marketplace at the turn of the 13th/14th centuries. It was then the seat of the Town Council with 24 councillors and 3 mayors and of the jury court . There were a market hall there too and a hall for public entertainment. The facade in the photo with the beautiful tracery work was added around 1600. Destroyed in about 80% in WWII, it has been lovingly restored and is now the seat of the County Council.

Pulpit at the Cathedral, Kamien Pomorski - Kamien Pomorski

Pulpit at the Cathedral, Kamien Pomorski

Cathedral Treasures

The Cathedral is even more interesting inside, boasting numerous invaluable works of art: altars, 16th and 17th century paintings, Romanesque sculptures dating back to the 13th century, stained glass windows, a Gothic font and many more.
I especially liked the early Baroque pulpit with bas-reliefs of the four Evangelists and figures of angels carrying a hammer, a ladder and other tools. The pulpit was founded in 1683 by Duke Boguslaw de Croy, who, in 1669, had also founded the absolutely stunning Baroque organ, which has made the Cathedral a venue of the Festival of Organ and Chamber Music, taking place here every year.
Don't miss the cloister garden, a rarity in Poland, with some interesting sculptures and a 500-year-old oak tree.
Admission fee: nothing to remember, so probably not much
Try to find a guide or buy a guidebook in the cathedral shop not to miss any of the treasures.
Photography inside is not allowed, but they let me take one picture for VT. Thanks.

Cathedral in Kamien Pomorski - Kamien Pomorski

Cathedral in Kamien Pomorski

The Cathedral

The Cathedral in Kamien Pomorski was founded by Duke Kazimierz I in 1176. The building was added to throughout the ages. So, the Romanesque and Gothic styles combine here to create the truly imposing structure. The cathedral was only slightly damaged during bombardment in WWII. Yet some of its treasures, such as the altar triptych, the precious crucifix from 1270 and the cathedral treasury had been removed before the coming of the front. Some of them, like the main altar triptych were later returned to the cathedral.
