Lodgers of the moat

Favorite thing: They send shivers down some people's spines but I simply love them and always have. My mother still remembers me putting them with my hand into my little bucket when I was just a toddler because she thought it was a disgusting thing to do. I didn't care. I may have frightened them - I didn't think of it at the time but I didn't do any harm to them, just watched them there and then let them out. So you can imagine what joy it was for me to see masses of them in the castle park of Krokowa - just woken from their winter sleep and swimming in the moat or basking on the paths, obviously enjoying the spring sunshine.
If, like me, you like frogs, or toads, because I think that is what they were, don't miss a walk in the park and a look or two down into the water of the moat - it's a most enjoyable experience. Just be careful not to tread on any of them - there are so many of them and often blending with their surroundings. And don't let your children hurt them. Enjoy them!

Island on the moat

Fondest memory: It's just a memory, when we visited Krokowa this year the swans' nest was no longer there. We did see a small island in the middle of the moat and a strange little wooden house with no entrance, like a round beehive, on it. Not a swans' house for sure.
But a few years ago when the picture was taken, the swans' nest was there for everybody to inspect. Houseproud, the couple went about laying the eggs and improving the nest for their young, soon to come. What happened later, I cannot say, but there must be some reason why the nest is not there any more. Perhaps it is better not to show off your happiness. There may be some truth in the African belief in the evil eye.
