"Broughton Castle" Broughton by evaanna
Broughton Travel Guide: 10 reviews and 22 photos
Broughton Castle is situated just about 4 km south west of Banbury. Built in 1300 by Sir John de Broughton, whose magnificent tomb can be seen in the nearby church, it was sold in 1377 to William Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, whose nephew married into the Fiennes family, who still own and live in the castle.
The castle incorporates the imposing Gatehouse, the manor house with its beautiful gardens and some outbuildings (former stables?), which now house a cafe. The castle grounds are surrounded by a moat. Just beyond the bridge across it is the parish church of St Mary's, where the bodies of many members of the Fiennes family were entombed.

The exterior and interior of the Manor House looks stunning.
Another fine castle! In UK, there are not many French style gardens like Ladies' Garden! Interesting to learn what is a hagioscope, thanks!
I have never heard of boots warmers, what a great idea!
Interesting castle and beautiful gardens. But I like most your local customs tips. What a great idea with hot water bottle for boots!
What a "treat" to read and viiew your Broughton pages. Since my favorites are architecture, history, and gardens...I was delighted. You've done a topnotch job.
Ewa, a supurb page on Broughton Castle!! I really enjoyed your photos and detailed descriptions of your tour through the Castle and its grounds! My wife & I were in Oxfordshire in Feb/04 but could only gaze in wonder from across the moat.
Fine castle photos and texts. You're not the only one who doesn't understand cricket!
The manor house and gardens are very attractive .I once lived in a house that had bellpulls. There was a cattle grid at the top of our peninsula to keep the cattle straying onto the main roadand we had to get off and push our bikes.
Very interesting page on the Manor House = you were lucky to be able to take pictures inside!!
That is a really great Manor House with a beautiful garden, thanks for sharing !
