If you see Edinburgh once, you simply cannot forget it. I suspect it is the most charming of all European cities, but I have not seen many. When I arrived there, the sun had already set and the beautifully-lit Castle high up above was the first thing that I saw. I was just being taken to a restaurant but all I wanted was to stop there and look. In the fortnight that followed I saw many other attractions of Scotland's capital but none was more impressive. I stayed in Edinburgh for my work and was free to do the sightseeing only at weekends and after 1.30 pm. on weekdays, which was not much considering that it was November and it got dark at 4. Yet, against all my friends' forebodings, the weather was gorgeous - not a drop of rain, cloudless sky for days on end, hardly any wind, which made the all-pervading smell of breweries stronger. It was cold, I admit, and lots of people around me had a bad cough - but I did not catch it, perhaps because I was wearing warmer clothes than most. I lived in B&B in Comely Bank and passed by the castle every day on my way to the university. I knew hardly anybody in Edinburgh and yet I was never alone. People chatted to me at bus-stops, on buses, in cafes, in response to which I could sometimes only nod my head politely, as I could not understand some accents. But I valued all those encounters above everything else - they added to my delight in the city's wonderful architecture, the narrow winding streets off the Royal Mile (the Wynds), the museums and galleries, of which I did not see enough. |
In the two weeks I visited many places in and around Edinburgh: Linlithgow - the birthplace of Mary Stuart, the charming Duddingston Village, the Botanic Garden with its wonderful Glasshouse Experience and even went to Stirling for a day. But I did not have a camera there - the one that we had at the time was not fooIproof enough for me to use. But I have recently asked some friends of mine to lend me their photos of the places that I have been to. I would like to thank Iza Szymanska and Basia Godlewska and now also my VT friend Shane (uglyscot), whose lovely photos you can see on my page now. But I really hope that some day I will be able to add mine when I see Edinburgh again - not only in my dreams. |

I remember a similar story of a dog which wouldn't leave Rondo Grunwaldzkie in Kraków for, it also got a monument of its own, can't remember the name though. |
