Wroxton is a little village in the Cotswolds, 5 miles west of Banbury along the A422. We only stopped there for a few minutes on our way back from Stratford-upon-Avon tantalised by the lovely pond with ducks and beautiful cottages. Don't miss this real beauty spot! Little as it is - with just over 300 inhabitants - Wroxton prides itself on its long and eventful history. Mentioned already in the Domesday Book, by 1086 the village had 24 tenants and in 1217 it even got its Abbey, which thrived until the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. The original Priory having been ravaged by fire, the present Abbey, which now houses an American college, was built in 1618 by Sir William Pope, Earl of Downe. You can take a stroll round its gardens but the interiors can only be seen by virtual tour on the Internet. The village has three churches, a Church of England, a Catholic one (with a thatched roof, which is very rare on a church) and a Methodist Chapel. The place has changed very little over the centuries - most of the cottages date from the early 17th and 18th centuries, some are even older. It's a real gem of a village! |
