The Southern California Dream is still alive and kicking. I just moved South to Los Angeles about two years ago from San Francisco. I was born in Santa Barbara, however, but spent many college formulative years in Santa Cruz and also San Francisco.
LA really does have it all. Its the perfect mix of suburban and urban lifestyles. Its close to the beach, to San Diego, Santa Barbara, has a few major airports so you can travel North to SF or East to NYC. Las Vegas is 50 minutes away by plane. You can drive to the mountains in the winter to ski. Or the desert to meditate, or to Catalina Island just to escape to rush of cars.
Sure, driving and traffic can be awful but the people who complain the most are those who choose to live far from where they work. I actually ride my bike to work a couple times a week. If there were a better subway, Id use it.
For those who like the diversity and excitement of the big city and who are also active and love living in close proximity to nature, LA really does come through. Also, you really cant beat the awesome weather we have here year round.
People like to give LA a bad rap. Sure, nothing compares to the buzz of NYC, its street cultures, its art scenes, its night clubs, its bars....And sure, other cities are more quaint and community oriented than LA...but LA is an anomaly. A mixed urban dream gone awry. A dystopia, a paradise lost yet re-discovered and found. Los Angeles and Hollywood are going through a renaiassance. Its changing for the better. Its getting nicer here by the week.
However, WARNING, LA is a weird weird place to visit. I dont reccomend coming here unless you know someone. LA is all about the lifes tyle, about the living experience. Toomuch to see too much to do North West, South East. |
