A former bedouin village and other Petra, Jordan Hotel/Accommodation Reviews

We stayed at the Taybet Zaman Hotel. This village has been leased for 30 years by their owners - the inhabitants - to the Sofitel Group, who converted the place into a hotel. The Swiss didn't meet their financial targets and sold the lease to a Jordan company. In about 15 years the inhabitants will decide what to do with the place. It is a unique hotel / resort and we had lovely rooms.

Two drawbacks:
- it doesn't have the atmosphere of a village;
- the food is 'hotel quality', not up the a 5* standard.

They cater for large groups and only have a self-service / counter restaurant. There is a large variety of dishes, this is not the problem. The problem is that most of these dishes are flat, tasteless and rather cold. We preferred the restaurant in Petra, which is also self-service but is cheaper - i'm Dutch - is more tasty and has a hugh turn over: the food doesn't become cold.

Staff is very helpful, it is not their fault.

Unique Qualities: A two centuries old village, beautifully renovated. All rooms are different. Great views.

Directions: Taybeh Village, a few kilometers down the road from the 'hotels road'. There is an ATM near the mosque.

We stayed one night in this resort. We arrived at 15.00 and were allowed to keep the room until 14.00 next day. This gave us the opportunity to visit Petra in afternoon and in the morning and swim off the dust on returning at about 19.00 and 13.00. (The heated swimming pool - with a view - closes at 20.00h). The views from the rooms are interesting. Very friendly people.

The resort is a two minute walk from the visitor center.

We dined in the restaurant. The buffet wasn't very special - a lot of groups, but still many dished suffered from a long stay - but the a la carte was very good, and just as expensive. The chicken, the lamb as well as the salmon. The wait was long, but well worth it.

Made a reservation through the telephone, one day before arrival.

Unique Qualities: The swimming pool, illuminated at night.
