Tel Aviv began as an idea: let's build a new city in these white dunes; a garden city. 100 years ago, a group of people, mostly from Jewish origin, bought a large chunk of inhospitable dunes and started to build. In the 30's, a large number of architects flew from Germany. Infected by the Bauhaus ('build a house'), they designed simple but effective houses for the many. Using local material and materials brought from Europe, an unique set of 'flats' were build. These are functional buildings, where the ornamentation has a function: white to reflect the sun, balconies for shade, lines to give shade to windows. The White City. |
