My Peace Corps Haitian experience in 2001

Beautiful Haitian children - Jeremie
This photo was taken by my friend Roxane who is now working for an NGO in Jeremie, Haiti. She used to work for another NGO in Fort-Liberte, where I was stationed as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I miss her and I miss the Haitian children with their beautiful smiles.

A serene, quiet place to relax

When the poverty and other aspects of Haitian reality were getting to me too much, I would take a book and sit by the bay on the terrace of this small hotel. The Cuban doctors were also coming here to take a break and we would have a beer and socialize. We'd swim in the bay or listen to music: mostly Konpa - local Haitian rhythm.

Ruins of Fort St. Joseph

This was my favorite swimming spot, where I would come with Mirta, a Cuban radiologist also stationed in Fort-Liberte. Very often local kids would join us. I was trying to teach them to swim but they were just laughing, joking, and asking me questions about life in the United States. That's where they all wanted to go someday.
