| Peace Corps me in Xaragua, Haiti |
It almost killed me, but I loved it! In 2001, I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Haiti. I was stationed in Fort-Liberte, a rural area of Haiti, near the border with Dominican Republic. There was no electricity, no clean water, no medical services. The unsanitary conditions and the ensuing dengue, giardia, typhoid, malaria, worms, etc., caused me to be med-evac'd after only 9 months. Nevertheless, it was a life-changing experience, as my whole value system was turned upside down. I'd do it all over again. Alas, after the events of February, 2004, Peace Corps ended its program in Haiti -- for the third time in history. |
| Alex and Kevin - September 2004 |
My both sons are in the military I am such a peace-loving person; I hate violence and consider war the ultimate violent act. So, how on earth did I end up with both my sons in the military? My older son, Alex, is in the Navy. His son, Dylan, celebrated his second birthday in August with daddy gone to Iraq on a seven-months mission. Thanks goodness he's back in Norfolk now. My younger son, Kevin, is a Staff Sergeant in the Marines. He enlisted at 17, still in high-school. First, he was a helicopter mechanic, then a drill instructor, now he's in an Officer Candidate School, going through college. He majors in Psychology (like me), and - like me - is a life member of Psi Chi, an honor society for psychology majors. He broke his neck on a Marines' obstacle course last year but recovered almost completely by now. Semper Fi! |
My grandson Dylan is two-years-old. He knows all the letters of the alphabet, can count to eleven and can sing "Twinkle, twinkle little Star." He's got sunny disposition and is a joy to have around! (sure, I'm biased). |
| A restaured colonial building in Old Havana |
Havana, Cuba - my favorite travel destination I am absolutely enchanted with this place, except for its nasty regime, of course. When Castro falls, I plan to move to Cuba and settle there. The music, the people, the culture - it's just awesome! The only thing in true need of improvement is the food (yikes!). What do Cubans do when the lights go out (almost every night, because of shortages of petroleum)? They get out their drums, their tres (guitar-like instrument), their clave (wooden percussion instrument) and their guiro (gourde), and they d-a-n-c-e! |
