At the end of Market Street in the downtown financial district of San Francisco is the Ferry Building. You can easily spot it by the clock tower. Also, Market Street dead ends with the Ferry Building straight ahead. From there, you can take a pleasant ride across the bay to the beautiful villages of Sausalito & Tiburon. I described Sausalito in my previous chapter. Tiburon looks different, has several outdoor restaurants over the water with great views, lots of interesting shops & and a wine store that offers free wine tasting - it's fun & delicious to compare the various wines. As you may know, just north of Marin Country where these villages exist are the counties of Napa & Sonoma, also known as the Wine Country. That's where so many of the California wines come from.

From across San Francisco Bay via the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, the city looks like a glittering jewel on the hills rising above the water. You can see this magical view from the beautiful little village of Sausalito where you will find upscale shops and art galleries, some lovely restaurants like the Spinnaker, which sits out over the water and is all glass on the side looking toward San Francisco.

On a day in November -March, you could be sunning yourself in one of the many suburbs of San Francisco or water skiing in the Delta or windsurfing under the Golden Gate Bridge; then in four hours drive up into the Sierra Mountains, 11,000 feet above sea level, to the Lake Tahoe area and go snow skiing for a day or two. Many people in the SF area head for the Sierras in the winter to the many ski resorts there.

If you decide on a side trip to Yosemite, you must see one of it's many treasures. In Yosemite valley is a magnificent hotel & restaurant: the Ahwahnee.
As a National Historical Landmark and one of the most distinctive resort hotels in North America, The Ahwahnee is known for its great granite façade, striking beamed ceilings, massive stone hearths, richly colored Native American artwork, and finely appointed rooms. With 123 rooms & only 99 guest rooms plus 24 cottages, the Ahwahnee is usually booked a year in advance.
Completed in 1927, the hotel features grand public spaces featuring giant stone fireplaces, massive hand-stenciled beams, rich tapestries and elegant stained glass.
When we went to Yosemite, we couldn't afford to stay at the Ahwahnee (with rates starting at $350 per room) but we could have dinner there. It was a wonderful experience. Just to walk through the place is very enjoyable.
For great photos of the Ahwanhnee, see the website below.
