The Ragusano ( South East)

by ralfar - last update: Apr 27, 2006

modica

The Ragusano - Baroque towns, Splendid Valleys

I visited the Ragusano region ( south eastern tip) many times.
It is the (dryest) part of Sicily, but certainly the most fertile and most importantly, the richest overall as far as architecture is concerned.

MODICA
Modica is really a jewel because it has both an old history and it is also a modern commercial centre. Its setting ( part in the deep valley, parts on the valley side make it really picturesque. Modica is considered to be one of Italy's food speciality havens. When you go there it is easy to understand why. High quality sweets and choclate shops are everrywhere. and also the numerous churches and palaces. Modica is definitely a MUST when visiting Sicily.
Scicli

Scicli- baroque jewel in the valley

Scicli was my next stop, close to Modica. You arrive through a winding road with fields and carob trees and deep valleys all around. Scicli is a fantastic Baroque town, with many churches and palaces. it is situated where three deep valleys meet. One can feel the history around you and there is also a cathedral on the cliff face, abandoned after one of the earthquakes which have hit this region. it is in fact around 500 years old! the view of Scicli from the cathedral says it all.
Ragusa ( not my pic)

Ragusa

this picture is of Ragusa the capital of the Ragusano region . This area is characterised by the open weathered deep valleys with villages clung to their sides, all steeped in history ( and also a history of earthquakes and invasions) Just to mention the towns of Ragusa, Noto, Ispica, Modica, baroque and medieval jewels like nowhere else. Not to mention the 'greek' city of Siracusa a museum in itself. ( slightly further north towards Catania).

Seeing these towns and villages gives you the impression of passing through another moment in time.
