Getting there and away:
Luxembourg is a landlocked country and the only Grand Duchy in the world. I visited Luxembourg City and Echternach on my way from Germany to Belgium. In the morning, I took the train from Trier (Germany) to Luxembourg City, then the bus from Luxembourg City to Echternach (approx. 1 hour).
From Echternach I took the bus to Ettelbruck (Luxembourg), then the train and by evening I was in Leuven (Belgium). Buses to and from Echternach were run by CFL, do check the schedules online first.
The sights in Luxembourg City:
Cathedrale Notre-Dame (photo in album)
Grand Ducal Palace - was constructed in the 16th century as a town hall in the Spanish Renaissance style and now the official residence of the Grand Duke
Marche aux Poissons (Fish Market) - historical center of the Old Town
Chemin de la Corniche (photo on the left) - A walkway known as "the finest balcony in Europe" with gorgeous views
Picturesque lower towns of Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal (photo in album)
The sights in Echternach:
Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, founded in 698 by St. Willibrord, a monk of Irish origin.
Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 7th century by St. Willibrord, is built around a large square courtyard. (photo above)
