"Mountainous Andorra" Andorra by wcph
Andorra Travel Guide: 495 reviews and 1,040 photos
Area: 468 sq km
Best time to go: if you are not planning to ski, then it is best to visit between June and September when there are more hours of sunshine.
Capital: Andorra la Vella
Currency: Euro (EUR)
Independence: 1278 (was formed under the joint suzerainty of the French count of Foix and the Spanish bishop of Urgel)
Languages: Catalan (official), French, Castilian, Portuguese
Location: Southwestern Europe, between France and Spain
Religions: Roman Catholic (predominant)
Visas: not required for most nationalities
There was not much to see in Andorra la Vella and almost everything of interest was in and around the Barri Antic (Historic Quarter) (photo on the left and in album). This area was very small, with cobblestone streets and stone houses.
The highlight of the Barri Antic is Casa de la Vall (House of the Valley), Andorra's parliament building since 1702. (photo in album)
How did I get to Andorra La Vella?
It was quite a long journey:
13:28 Train from Carcassonne, France
17:23 Arrived L'Hospitalet-Pres-L'Andorre, France (changed at Toulouse Matabiau)
19:30 Bus from L'Hospitalet-Pres-L'Andorre
20:45 Arrived Andorra La Vella
There was supposedly a bus from L'Hospitalet at 18:00, which would cut down the waiting time. Andorra tourist information sent me the bus schedule and I also checked the website of the bus company but apparently the information was incorrect. It was raining in L'Hospitalet and I spent 2 hours waiting in the small, smoke-filled cafe near the station wondering if Andorra was worth the effort.
I checked on the internet and the following day was forecasted to be rainy. Somehow the next morning it was sunny - I was glad I came! It was easier to leave Andorra la Vella - I took the Alsina Graells bus that left Andorra la Vella at 10:30 and arrived Barcelona Nord at 13:30.
Information mentioned above is current as of June 2005.
