Not paying attention and my wallet was lifted on an early morning (9:00am), crowded Metro ride. Good news: I had very little cash and one credit card. Notified police ASAP and called VISA to cancel card. In less than 2 hours the thief had put over $1500 on the card. having the police report helped in getting charges off my card. My advice: 1. Don't carry wallet in back pants pocket, or purse or one of those little pouches strapped around your waist. Carry valuable inside clothing or in front pants pocket where you can keep your hand on it. 2. Do not carry more than one credit card on your person. If you are traveloing alone, you can stash one at your hotel's safe or if traveling with a companion, have different cards, so if you lose one you are not screwed. 3. I rarely use traveler's checks anymore, although they are OK in France. I carry a small amount of cash and a credit card which is easy to keep secure and can be used virtually eveywhere in Paris, France and Europe. If it is a debit card you can get local currency cheaper than exchanging checks. Also you get the bank rate on all purchases, while using greenback will cost you dearly. 4. Keep card numbers seperate to facilitate cancelling if you lose them.
