Citadella is a small town between Vicenza and Treviso, on the SS53 at the junction of the SS47, the Padova - Bassano road. Traffic nowadays is routed around the old town centre, away from the narrow streets. There is a wall round the old town centre, in the form of a rough circle, with gates on the major roads. Right in the centre is a piazza, whilst outside the walls there are suburbs stretched out for maybe 2 km around.
We stopped at Citadella on our way back from Verona to the airport at Treviso, hoping to find some lunch. The centre was deserted, but there was a bar open in the square, and we were able to have a snack. Apart from the bar, the place was deserted, not a soul to be seen, and only the occasional car passing through. Just before we left, the peace was broken when workman relaying one part of the square started up their excavator. It was nice whilst it lasted though.
A few hours later we were on the plane home, and flew over the town. It was easily spotted from the air, with the walls, gates and piazza all clearly recognisable. Another nice memory to take home with us. |
