An impromtu visit to gorgeous Garmisch

In the height of tourist season

Photo from just outside our guesthouse
In the height of tourist season we came to Garmisch to try to find a place to stay. Jeff was confident we would find something since he had just been here playing in a hockey tournament and there were signs everywhere for accomodation. We tried the one guesthouse he had known before and no one was there. The next old lady whose house we knocked on that said zimmer frei, room available. Took one look at Jeff and made all kind of excuses why we couldn't stay. We had been camping for a couple nights and he has long hair and his shirt had the some bad words on it. Oh dear! The next one we were lucky but didn't want to pay that much but we decided to go for it. So we settled in and left in 2 mins. to find a beer.

OMG! It's Garmisch's Annual Beerfest

Miracles of miracles Garmisch was having there beerfest. It was a one large tent deal. The first night we went was young couples night and almost everyone was in traditional costume. We didn't take our camera that night. The next time we went it happened like this. We went out to eat and when we walked out the restaurant there were hundreds of people dressed in all types of Bavarian traditional cosume, from babies to grandparents. It was a parade to the tent grounds! Jeff about we his pants due to so many photo opportunities. We followed them all the way to the grounds.

Please see my tips page for Garmisch for other stunning pictures of this event.
Look at all those flowers, wow!

Decided to drive to Oberamergau

Jeff and I hadn't been to this little town since 1991 when we were doing Eurail and took the local bus. The local bus took hours it seemed but we met some locals and hung out with them. We bought a wood carving at the time and a cuckoo clock. That clock was 350 dollars then and it would be worth around 1600 today. Oberamergau has some great artwork on the building as does Garmisch.
