Oahu, Waikiki and North shore

by seoulgirl - last update: Feb 21, 2005

packed beach waikiki

Waikiki Beach

Very crowded beach in Waikiki. We just walked by. It's surrounded by hotels, just horrible. Couldn't find any decent restaurants. There was road construction and traffic snarls.

North Shore Haleiwa

We showed up in Oahu without reservations for the first night. I called about 30 places until I found a hostel w/ rooms. Easily got a bus there for 8 dollars but took forever forever to get there. Stopped at a zillion hotels to let people off. Place was old and rundown as was the neighborhood. Right downtown Waikiki. Went to the North Shore and stayed at two hostels. It was laid back. Haleiwa was very small town and touristy. You could barely get across the road. But the beaches were fun and not too crowded. Stayed last night in Waikiki again. Found chinatown. Bars were dark and loungy. Tired and kind of depressing looking people and places. But very nice people overall!

A big ole sweet turtle!

Turtle Beach

Looked like a great place to snorkel. Lots of sea turtles. Quite a few people but nothing like Waikiki beach. Fun little spot of beach. Take the bus to Haleiwa and ask what the beach is called where all the turtles are.

Pros:"Very nice locals, lots of beach/sun"
Cons:"Everything seems to have been built in the 60's, run down and tired looking"
In A Nutshell:"I was disappointed to not find more interesting restaurants. It just seemed like a very exhausted city, over touristy. Heard the other island are much much nicer."

Sounds like its gone downhill, like Miami did. I traveled to Hawaii a lot in the 70's, it was fantastic then... all new :-)! Nice work, well done... let's see some more Michelle :-)!
