Christmas in the tropics

by seoulgirl - last update: Jan 23, 2005

This was my first trip to anywhere in Asia besides Korea. I was very excited. We spent a couple days in Kuala Lumpur and then flew by Airasia to Langkawi. We had trouble finding a place to stay because I booked our flight so late. We had reservations at Sandy Beach resort but I decided to get something else if I could since I had read bad reviews about Sandy Beach. I was fortunate to get reservations for our first 2 nights in Langkawi and then the last night a nicer place also. So, only 3 nights in Sandy Beach, during Christmas. We like to try out different accomodations anyway. No one understood why we weren't staying in just one place. It totally puzzled them. So, we went to Langasuka resort. They upgraded us to this huge room for only 40$ a night. It was a super room but a bit run down. Other patrons were mostly muslims w/ young kids. We are childless Westerners. We spent the afternoon there. Then in the evening we spent by ourselves swimming in the ocean and drinking wine. No one was around. Next day we rented a car at the hotel lobby. Driving on the other side of the road and the car was very strange for my husband. I shifted from the passenger seat for awhile. It was really fun. Took a few hours to circle the island. Did the cable car ride at Oriental Village. I cried at the top, it as sooo high up in the air, scary. Shopped at the big mall in Kuah. Bought mostly food items to take home, spices and spice packs, cheap. Went to Sandy Beach the next day. Had to fight to get a bungalow which is what I thought we had reserved. She said we were in the hotel and bungalow's are only for walk ups. I pretty much said, aren't I walking up right now. Give me a bungalow. We luckily got one. It was okay, read my review. Had a nice romantic dinner at Garden Beach resort and time at the beach Reggae bar. Days were spent shopping and laying around.

Scary experience. We were far from the coast that day in Ipoh, Malaysia.
