Off The Beaten Path: Most Beautiful Spot in New York
  • Tip Rating:
  • Though it is hard to call Central Park off the beaten path the Conservatory Pond or the Boat Bond in the Park on the E side at 73 street is in my estimation the most beautiful and tranquil spot in all of New York which explains why on fair weather weekends you will often see many New Yorkers having their wedding photos snapped here.

The large pond is surronded by shady trees and benches for sitting as people big (me) and small (the kids next to me) alike sail remote control sailboats along the water (you can rent them most days for $10 an hour, very fun). Check ahead but their is also a small but well stocked snack bar that serves hot dogs, ice cream etc.) there as well.

Also make sure to check out the Alice in Wonderland statue at the north end of the Boat Pond. Kids will get a kick out of climbing under the mushrooms on which are perched several characters from the faumous novel.

Off The Beaten Path: Wollman Rink
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Though the masses will head to Rockafeller Center to skate on the small rink in front of the world faumous Rockafeller Christmas tree the savy traveler will certainly take in that sight but then walk to the entrance of Central Park at 59th street and head north thru the park about 1 block to Wollman Skating Rink where the ring is significantlyy larger and much easier to get time on. Don't get me wrong on the right Saturday or Sunday around the holidays this locale can be packed as well but it is significantly easier to get on the ice here than further downtown.

There are restrooms as well as a large snack bar right at the rink which is also welcome. The day I visited there were also various food vendors on the upper promenade as well for luch or a snack.

  • Located at 23rd Street at 5th Avenue and Broadway the Flat Iron Building was completed in 1905 and is one of those distinictive NYC buildings you have seen in photos, movies etc. for years. Most notable recently it was used as the Daily Bugle headquarters in the last two Spiderman movies starring Tobey Maguire.

Off The Beaten Path: Balto in Central Park
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Located in Central Park at East Drive and 67th, the statue of Balto who was the subject of a popular children's animated movie in 1995 stands and it is one of the most popular stop in Central Park, especially for kids. The statue was placed in 1925 and is there to commemerate a real life Balto and his transferring life saving medicine 660 miles thru Alaska to save folks from a diptheria epidemic.

Off The Beaten Path: Carousel in Central Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do something Ferris Bueller would have done when visiting Central Park, ride the carousel regardless of your age like we did. Located at 830 Fifth Avenue in Central Park at 64 Street. The current carousel dates to 1908 and is under 2 dollars a ride from what I recall. A nice summer spot to beat the heat the area is great for kids and provides a truly nostalgic feel to your New York City visit.

They were married in Newport, Rhode Island. It is a beautiful church, though.
