Martha's Vineyard

Dog in Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs
Oak Bluffs (not Oaks Bluff which would seem to make more sense) is a old, junky, funny town with its gingerbread cottages and old time carousel. Home to most of the island's nightlife it is also were one can find their share of funny island kitsh mercandise. Oak Bluffs is obviously the place to be to pick up that My brother went to Martha's Vineyard and all I got was this lousy T-shirt for the folks at home. The town also has many great restaurants (like the always great Jimmy Sea's Pan Pasta) and all in all is a fun place to stop especially with kids.
Entering Vineyard Haven
Vineyard Haven is probably ther most well known of all the towns and seems to be the town which most celebrates its sea going nature. Vineyard Haven is also home to the islands most faumous resident, that black dog you invariably see plastered all over T-Shirts and swetashirts no matter were you go. That insignia belonging to the Black Dog Tavern which is by far not only Vineyard Haven's but the entire island most faumous restaurant. It sits so close to the dock and the water you can practiclly reach your hand out their window and plunk it in Vineyard Sound. Vineyard Haven also has the largest and most modern ferry port which means in the summers especially it is a constant flurry of activity. The town unlike Oak Bluffs has quieter more thoughful shops and tends to quiet down considerably after the last ferry has landed or departed.
Edgartown Ferry
If Vineyard Haven seems in touch with its sea faring past and present then Edgartown has white clapboard homes and pristine white picket fences. It is certainly the type of town were a man in his fifties would wear white pants, Sperry topsiders and a captains hat all while demanding to be taken seriously. Edgartown for this very reason boasts beautiful water views with scores of expensive yahts and boats on display in the Harbor. If you are like me always thought of Martha's Vineyard as a place were the rich and faumous went to relax Edgartown of all three of the main towns on the island seems to be closet to this ideal.
