I'm a Canuck being served a German beer from a Welsh waitress in an Irish pub in the Spanish quarter of a town in the good ol' U.S. of A. Can it get much more strangely diverse than that? "You're from Cardiff?!" I ask our waitress, Deb. "Yep," she says. I bound from my stool. "I want to see Cardiff so badly! That's where they film the new Doctor Who series!" Her eyes light up in excitement at the sound of the familiar TV series while my companions' eyes roll as though legions of Trekkies had just walked into the room. "Yes, that's right, it's so good," she says and we begin our discussion about filming locations in her home city.
This cozy pub has a reputation for serving the best sandwiches in town, but we're here because they pour a great pint.
When we first visited this place yesterday, as one of the stops on our ghost tour of old Saint Augustine, it was a hopping, crowded, busy Saturday night. The guide had demonstrated how a broom placed in the centre of the room would stay standing up on its own and pointed out how all of the items on the walls were nailed in place to prevent supernatural forces from knocking them down.
But this Sunday evening there's only a handful of people sitting around--some inside, some outside on the deck. The song I chose from the fully-loaded 80s jukebox finally comes on--Power Station's explosive cover of T-Rex's "Get It On, Bang A Gong."
