I really did want to be a pirate when I grew up. That was on the list somewhere below "time traveller" and "superhero" but above "astronaut". I always put the most realistic jobs at the end of my list. Anyway...
My parents took the family here when I was 12 years-old--around 1983. My brothers and I adored this little town! It was so easy here to imagine giant ships attacking the fort relentlessly and pirates sitting around at tables drinking rum in the small taverns. Pirates! Pirates had really been here! ...Sir Francis Drake and Captain John Davis. We wondered about Captain Kidd... about Blackbeard.
Not to mention there was the original "Fountain of Youth" in this town!
To my parents' surprise and disbelief we loved this place more than Orlando, Daytona, the alligator farm, or even Disney World. This was no animatronic "Pirates of the Caribbean" junk ride--this was the real deal! What young boy wouldn't love that? I've wanted to revisit ever since.
- Pros:Lots of good pirate junk! ...Oh, and the town and restaurants are amazing too.
- Cons:Last call for alcohol is 12:30 AM. So pass the rum, ya scurvy dog!
- In a nutshell:Shiver me timbers! Saint Augustine is good times!

Nice page on one of my favorite cities in Florida!
I'd love to go back to Florida! The meeting in St. Augustine was one of my favorite ones ever. :)
This is a wonderful place to relax and take in history. You seem to have enjoyed the trip here. My choice once was to live here-Amelia Island. I took over real estate to sell for a bank in 1970's. It was dismal then

It reminds me of being served an Italian meal in a Chinese restaurant in Paris. You certainly had a good time in St Augustine.
