| Edinburgh - View from the Cowgate (2005) |
Travel Dates: August 23-25, 27-28 2005.
Yes, that's a castle perched on the edge of a rockcliff. Foreboding Edinburgh Castle sits precariously, you would think an earthquake would have shaken it off by now. But on a tour you find out how much the castle is actually built into the rock. |
| Edinburgh - Santa? (2005) | Welcome to "Auld Reekie": City of Ghosts, Murder, Mystery, Torture, Execution, and Happy Fun Festivals!I tried as hard as I could to imagine Edinburgh in its heyday, but it was completely beyond the realm of my brain's capacity. Imagine being greeted at the gates with putrid heads and skulls mounted on spikes; dense smoke billows from the castle at the top of the hill where women are being burned at the stake as witches; you can hear crowds screaming for blood from the Canongate and Grassmarket squares as people are hung from gallows or beheaded by guillotine; the streets are overrun with rats as garbage and human waste flows down the alleys a half-foot deep; the buildings are completely blackened with filth and soot; coal and wood smoke make the air thick with smog, almost unbreathable. Horror, horror! ...But it's so pretty now! |
| Edinburgh - Fringe Performers (2005) |
August is Busy! Book Way in Advance! I hadn't planned this Edinburgh stop around any event in particular and couldn't figure out why it was so difficult to find a room online for Edinburgh. ...And why rooms were so damn expensive. Well, turns out the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was going on that week and it's the world's largest arts festival with about 15,000 performers doing more that 25,000 shows. The woman who checked me in at the hotel said, "It's unbelievable that you found this room online, I've been telling people for months that we were at capacity." Recommended Movie: "Trainspotting" (1996). |

JessH Thu Jun 11, 2009 14:22 UTC Hey Hey! Had to return to your Edinburgh page as I'm starting to miss that city (next visit will just have to wait though :-( Have just started my page, did you visit the "Last Drop" pub? Have a look at my tip if you like (don't rate, just read...) | Nemorino Sun Jan 7, 2007 13:00 UTC Great page on Edinburgh! I used to visit sometimes when one of my sons was a student there. The Festival Theatre is also haunted, at least that's what one of the lovely young ushers told me when I struck up a conversation with her. | clairegeordio Sat Aug 19, 2006 16:51 UTC Very interesting page! Shame you didn't get to see the real Mary King's close as it was a great experience! Your ghosts tour sounds like a good laugh! | Marie-France Tue Apr 4, 2006 02:30 UTC Very interesting and spooky page. Well done! So, Ed, do you believe in ghosts? :-) |
