What I thought was going to be the most boring part of my trip to Morocco, a 4-hour drive from Marrakesh to Ait Ben Haddou and then back, really turned out to be a highlight of my journey to that country. The Atlas Mountains were breathtakingly spectacular!

On the Road to the Sahara

I'd envisioned this day as a long drive along dusty trails, with nothing to look at except rock and sand. How wrong was I? The ascent and decent through a mountain range of unspoiled beauty, along narrow roads bordered by thousand-foot precipices, the slopes as colourful as they are steep, little towns nestled on the hills or in the crevices, scale and perspective completely impossible to capture the in the lens of a camera...

Looking out our tour bus window at one point, in complete awe at the panorama facing me, I whisper to myself, "Wow, that's crazy..." My friend, Allan, sitting in the seat in front of me overhears and parrots back, "...That is crazy."

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Best scenery E-V-E-R!
  • Cons:Slight altitude sickness. Paved roads, but scary nonetheless.
  • In a nutshell:A drive you'll never forget!
