Varadero - Downtown at Sunset (2004)

Travel Dates: February 28 - March 6 2004.

Our first trip to Cuba! I got detained on the way into Varadero by airport customs security while they went through my backpack--they swore I had walkie-talkies in my bag but it was just two stacks of baseball cards in their aluminum packaging. I was the second last guy to leave the airport, the couple that was last to leave had a cellphone. A crazy introduction!

The Maritim

Maritim - Dancing by the Pool

We got this deal last minute and paid half of what it went for in the travel brochure. A five-star. After the airport ordeal we checked into the Maritim (previously called the "LTI Varadero") and let the relax begin.

Big, Big Beach

Maritim - Vendors on the Beach (2004)

Vardero is Cuba's premier beach resort town and 20 km of white sandy beaches are there to greet you. It goes on in either direction as far as the eye can see. Pelicans hover the water here. It's so nice, Al Capone used to take his vacations here and you can still visit his summer house.

VAradero sounds like a town that has changed little and the old cars depict that. No cell phones allowed?
