Gosport is a little town under " the smoke" of the navi town Portsmouth. It is surrounded by sea water and finds shelter from the wind by the isle of White that lies just out of the coast. The climat is very mild and many days rain will fall on the other side of the harbour, which seperates Gosport from Portsmouth, while Gosports spends his day in sunshine. You will find many tropical trees and beautiful flowers because of this mild climate. The beaches are created by pebbles washing on the shore. The new Q.E. 2 cruise ship, comes sailing by this pebbel beach on a regular basis to enter the harbour of South Hampton which lies to the West of Gosport. Also the "Enterprise" aircraft carrier from the U.S.A. visits the Solent, that's how the water area is called, because it is to big to enter the harbour of Portsmouth. The shopping street is small and many people go to Porthmouth, South Hampton or London for their cloth shopping. To visit Portsmouth from Gosport you have to take a ferry across the harbour which add in my humble opinion to the charm of the place. Gosport has a lovely area created by the ferry where beautiful plants, tropical trees, and flowers make waiting for the ferry more than worth while. There are many B&B's in Gosport, hotels of which I will mention one which is a beautiful hotel just across the road seperating the beach from the land. This hotel stands on a estate that one's dominated the area. In the gardens surrounding this hotel you can still find the little pet gravesstones marking the place in which the owner of that estate has burried his beloved pets in former ages. A caravan park at the top of the beach hires out caravans in the summer season. Rowner is known as the area in which problems like drugs and alcohol, which we find all over the society, are more concentrated. Don't get me wrong it are often a hand full that gives a whole area a bad name. Alverstoke is known for the rich or more fortunate people. There is even a road which the locals call "milionair road" but the writer of this piece lives in a humble council house situated within the Alverstoke area proving that "lower class, or as we call ourselves, No class" prove the image of an area wrong.
Before you enter the beach, big wide open fields with long grass and many wild flowers are lying and waiting for us all to be enjoyed. The ones with high grass are especially enjoyed by our dogies Osho and Tara while other fields are nicely kept grassfield where the whole family can spend the day, flying their kites, or enjoying a BBQ, playing football, or playing some old fashioned cricket.
Because of the protection given by the isle of White the waves in the Solent are mostly calm and gentle for children to pay in. The need of watershoes is recommended by my own tender feet because of the pebbles which makes walking a difficult affair in case you are not used to walking on little rond stones. Many ferries cross the Solent to transport people with or without their cars or bikes to the isle of White from the harbour in Portsmouth. This gives a lively atmosphere while at the same time a peacefull feeling comes your way from the waters of the Solent. Also many private boats cross the Solent on their way to nowhere...lol On the beach is one small cafe in which simple meals can be used and tea can be bought., and ice cream can be enjoyed sold through a window with sometimes long rows of longing parents with even more longing children. Although both probably long for something else...lol Next to the cafe is a more formal restaurant where lunch and tea (dinner) can be used and some evening live music like Jazz is played.
- Pros:You have it all, sea, woods, city nearby, boats, nature. 2 1/2 hours by train to central London.
- In a nutshell:Great place to live, great place to visit.
