Times Square: Glaring Neon Lights
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Pretty much any subway line should end up in Times Square (if it ends up at Grand Central, take the S shuttle to Times Square). Located on 42nd Street and Broadway, it's the part of the city that never sleeps. The lights and the sounds will dazzle you beyond belief.

Times Square used to have the reputation of being a bad area to find drugs and prostitutes. Now, after mayor Rudy Giuliani had a crack at it, it's a safe tourist attraction with glitzy neon lights to vow any visitor.

Central Park: Refuge for city dwellers in a skyscraper town

  • New York City Central Park

  • Composing almost 850 acres, Central Park is visited by over 25 million people a year. With over 25 playgrounds, baseball parks, lakes, pools, an ice skating rink and the famous Delacorte Theater, Central Park is an oasis in a busy concrete jungle. Take a stroll, watch local performers (musical jazz, guitar places, acrobats or mimes), or enjoy a quick game of frisbee on the lawn.

St Patrick's Cathedral: Sanctuary for inner peace

  • As a Catholic, I truly enjoy visiting cathedrals and marvelling at the dedication and love that goes into building such monumental buildings. St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City is no exception.

St. Patrick's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of New York, Edward M. Egan. It is the largest decorated gothic-style Catholic Cathedral in the United States. The Cathedral seats about 2,200 people. The Pieta is three times larger than the Pieta in St. Peter's, Rome.

Weekend mass times for St. Patrick's Cathedral:
    Sat: 8am, 8:30am, 12noon, 12:30pm, and 5:30pm.
    Sun: 7am, 8am, 9am, 10:15am, 12noon, 1pm, 4pm, and 5:30pm.

Note: On most recent trip, security has been heightened. All bags will be subject to search, and no flash photography inside is allowed.

Brooklyn Bridge: World's largest suspension bridge
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Frequently photographed and even the site of more than one marriage that I know of, the Brooklyn Bridge is an icon of New York City. The Brooklyn Bridge (originally the New York and Brooklyn Bridge), one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, stretches 6,016 feet (1,834 m) over the East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn. On completion, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.

    Chinatown: Authentic Chinese Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • To truly experience Chinatown, you have to eat at Dim Sum Restaurant. Order any of the following to enjoy true Chinese cuisine (and not the black gooey soy sauce laden Chinese restaurant crap they throw at you!):
"Har gow" ( shrimp dumplings), "siew mai" (pork dumplings), "lor bak go" (turnip cake), "char siew bao" (steamed roast pork buns), "dahn taht" (egg custard, much like creme brulee but baked pastry) and "jook" (congee/porridge with variety of meat and scallions).

Metropolitan Museum of Art: Diverse collection
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, fondly called simply "The Met", is a large museum, with tall columns and immense stairways. The diversity of their collection spans the Stone Age to the 20th Century. The Egyptian Art gallery includes a whole temple that was shipped to America as a gift.

Expect to spend an entire day at the Met, and still not see every item they have here on display. Alternatively, if you have less time and are seeing several other museums, immediately grab a floor plan and prioritize your choices for what you wish to see. I normally only accomplish 4-5 galleries in half a day's visit.

    Hours:
    Mon Closed
    Tues-Thurs 9:30am-5:30pm
    Fri-Sat 9:30am-9:00pm
    Sun 9:30am-5:30pm

    Suggested Contribution:
    General $10
    Students/Seniors $5
12 years and under are free, when accompanied by adult.
