In 1998 a civil war started in Guinea-Bissau and the Frigate where I was serving went to this former portuguese colony on a peacekeeping mission.
In fact the closest I've been to land was like it can be seen in the pictures that were taken from the ship's helicopter and a few others that I took from the ship and will have to find where they are.
