A legend makes us believe that the name of Antwerp originated from the fact that once upon a time there was a giant, Druon Antigon, who exacted a heavy toll from all boatmen on the river Scheldt passing the Steen Castle. Those who refused were cut off their hand.
Silvius Brabo, a roman soldier, killed the giant, cut off his hand and threw it to the river. Hence the name (hand-werpen: to throw a hand).
More scientifically however the name can be explained by a promontory ("aanworp" or "aanwerp") reaching into the river, where an early settlement was established near the place where the Steen Castle was built a few centuries later.
