Located north of Lisboa is the small town of Mafra. The most impressive thing to see is obviously the National Palace/Convent of Mafra. The Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a rural forest covered estate attached to the town and it now can be visited on foot, by vehicle or horseback. The estate is kept well stocked with wild game including boar and there is a museum with a small collection of antique horse drawn vehicles. Nearby is a Nature Centre for the Preservation of the Iberian Wolf which is also open to the public.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, Mafra reflects the deep duality that constitutes it's identity. In one side, the erudite, producing culture of imponent works, in the line of the European tradition. On the other, the popular culture, with it's mediterranean tradition. Two cultures, different but in a full harmony.

I am just reading 'Memorial do Convento' by J. Saramago, so I've been interested to fiind out what VTers have to say about Mafra. Surprisingly, there is just one rated page (yours) on this destination. Thanks a lot for great pictures and interesting info.
Looks like an interesting place. I'm visiting Lisbon this weekend and hope to do a day-trip to Mafra.
Thanks for the tips. We hope to stop by Mafra in September.
Very interesting historical facts you have here. That small church does look impressive, even if it is quite simple in construction!
