"The Castle and the Mountain" Porto de Mós by bambino36
Porto de Mós Travel Guide: 11 reviews and 16 photos
The ancient village of Porto de Mós (Portus de Molis) has several remains of old civilisations, the roman road at Alqueidão da Serra, from Moors and fossils of dinosaurs' bones, which can be seen at the Municipal Museum. The castle, dating back from the reign of D. Afonso, Count of Ourém, with a square layout and four turrets, looks like a palace. In fact the first image that catches our eyes is this uncommon and magnificent castle-palace, conquered to the moors in 1148 by the first King of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques
Six Km away from Porto de Mós, marking the site where the Battle of Aljubarrota took place, is the village of S. Jorge, where is located the Chapel of S. Jorge of Aljubarrota and the medieval snares (Covas do Lobo). Right next to the chapel is the Military Museum that recreates some of the scenes of the battle that took place on the August 14th of 1385.
Porto de Mós is surrounded by the Natural Park of Serras de Aire and Candeeiros as well as the Alvados, StºAntónio and Mira de Aire's Caves. A Dinosaurs' track was recently discovered in "Chicken’s Stone Quarry", 10 kms away from Fátima in the little village of Bairro, in a Natural Park Protected Area. The area, of limestone of the Medium Jurassic, with 175 millions of years has at least 20 trails, some with 100 metres long.
Location
Porto de Mós is located 110Km distance from Lisbon. The best way to get there is taking the highway A8 and exit in Pataias and then take N242

Gosto muito a sua pagina! Greetings from Germany! Roland
Although I have been around Porto de Mós several times, I never visited the castle. And through your photos it looks so nice.
Nice page. I loved the castle :)
A brilliant page Antonio! Very interesting history of this most unusual looking Portugese castle! I would also like to wish you 'Boas Festas'!!
