I've been twice in Las Palmas, in 1990 and 1991. Both times for a weekend. Las Palmas turns to be a very busy city, a big harbour with lots of ships coming in and thousands of tourists searching for the sun and the beach.
Good place for shopping, particularly anything with electronics.
Once I went to Playa del Ingles, not for the beach, but for the nightlife. At a distance it looked like a small Las Vegas with all the bright lights. Every building in there is an hotel, a restaurant, a bar or a disco. It's filled with tourists... it was difficult to find anyone that spoke spanish and wasn't working there!!
