Ronda was the last place in the Iberian Peninsula to be conquered to the moors, which happened in the XV century. The curious thing is that Ronda was an independent moor kingdom when was conquered.
I went to Ronda by car, coming from Marbella. The road was good and I enjoyed the fascinating views to Ronda Mountains. Rising amid a ring of dark, angular mountains, the full natural drama of Ronda is best appreciated when entering the town.
Built on an isolated ridge of the mountain, it's divided in half by a river gorge, The Tagus, which drops sheer for 120m on three sides. Still more spectacular, the gorge is crossed by a 18th century arched bridge, the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), while tall white houses lean from its edges.
In fact, much of the attraction of Ronda lies in this extraordinary view, however, the town itself is also of great interest.
