I was in Italy during May and June of 1999, although only in the south and Sicily. About the places I've been I would say that I prefer Sicily, but of course, maybe the circumstances had lead to this opinion. I've been in Naples for a weekend, Bari and Brindisi for a day, but Palermo for an all week (which gave me the opportunity to visit places around Palermo, like Cefalù, Mondello and Isole Delle Femine).
In Naples the traffic in the streets was chaotic and the city looked a bit dirty to me, however I liked the people. Bari and Brindisi seem to live around the harbour and the people that comes in ferries from Greece and to Greece. Sicily was different... nice beaches, lots of monuments and a great nightlife.
