The portuguese architectonic legacy

Here and there around the city of Mindelo we find several constructions still remaining from portuguese colonial times.

Mindelo

Mindelo is the main town in the island. In opposition to the lack of "life" around the island, Mindelo is a very vibrant town. Nice restaurants where lobster is a "must eat" dish and very unexpensive too. Even the nightlife is very surprising.

Lack of vegetation

The Cape Verde islands are of volcanic origin and São Vicente is one of the most arid. The lack of vegetation is impressive and only some tiny spots in the island have a few trees and bushes.

The Eagle

It was erected in order to memorize the first flight across the Southern Atlantic in 1922. The portuguese naval pilots Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral made a stop in São Vicente on their difficult way from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro.
