The portuguese built Recife as a port city along tropical, white-sand beaches lined with palm trees.
Recife is the capital of the state of Pernambuco.
The city it's called the "Venice of Brazil" because it's divided with numerous waterways and connected by many bridges.
Recife in portuguese means coral reef which can be found lining the coast and were the origin of the city's name.
Nearby is the city of Olinda, now designated world heritage city, which was founded in 1537 by the Portuguese.
