I have visited Volcano NP twice now, and have been excited by the anticipation of seeing volcanic activity. On both occasions I have not been dissapointed. The park contains the worlds most active volcano, Kileaua. It has been active for the last 300,000 to 600,000 years, so chances are when you get there, it will still be active! It has only grown above sea level in the last 50,000 to 100,000 years. |
| | The Mauna mountains Mauna Loa (Long Mountain) is the tallest mountain in the world, if you measure it from where it starts, way below the waterline, and account for the 1000's of feet that it actually pushes the earth down! Mauna Kea (White Mountain) is the sister volcano that is often covered in snow, hence it's name. Atop Mauna Kea you will see telescopes and other instruments from many countries and agencies. |
