Take the elevator to the top of the Campanilee in St Marks square to see a grand view of the city and the islands surrounding it. It is a tourist destination and this is the heart of the tourist area.

The canals of Venice are it's focus, but you can navigate through roads as well. There are quieter areas of Venice that provide more intimate scenery and charm. seek them out. walk away from the the squares, get lost in the streets.

After its canals and glassware, Venice may be known for it's carnival and masks. We were not lucky enough to be there during the carnival, but the masks that were on sale in the numerous shops were very nice to look at. Some were works of art in their own right.

Now where did I park my gondola? I liked seeing the gondoliers walk over gondolas to get to theirs. I'm not sure if the gondolas are like taxis elsewhere, some owed by individuals, most run by companies??? I imagine in high tourist season, the gondolas don't stay parked for long. PS. a gondola ride will cost you a small fortune. Tip: In Italian you pronounce every letter and I think you primarily accent the first syllable hence gondola is pronounced with the accent on the 'gon'.. not the 'do'. If some one who actually speaks Italian can confirm please.
