Saffron Walden

I lived there for 4 years from dec 1999 to dec 2003. It is a hidden pearl in Essex! A lovely small market town with about 12000 people living there.

A nice square in the centre, with the libruary, market, all the shops you need. Enough banks, 12 pubs in the whole town, i guess thats 1 pub per 1000 people in town then! Colourful cottages, a beautiful church in the centre that dominates Saffron Walden's skyline. The cricket club area is beautiful. There is a maze that is several 100 years old. A Norman castle ruins. There are many nice tea bars in town.

Some nice restaurants, indian, chinese, italian, turkish, thai, spanish etc.

You have the famous Audley End house just on the outskirts of the town. Which has its beautiful gardens surrounding it, not to forget the minature railway!

The train station used by Saffron Walden people, is called Audley End and its at least 2 miles away, which has excellent links to London Liverpool street and upto the Manchester, as the Stansted line goes through.

Saffron Walden even has its own football club, playing at the charming Catons Lane. They used to play in the Rymans league, but have had a few economic problems and are now playing in the Ridgeons league. Always a good afternoon or evening at Catons lane, with the nice bar and food. The football is not bad!

There are several recruitment agencies, that supply staff for the town and surrounding villages. Most people tend to work in Cambridge,London, or nearby small towns of Bishops Stortford and Haverhill. Stansted Airport which is about 12 miles away supplies employment to many who live in Saffron Walden too.

The only negatives i can think of, is you need a car to get to other parts of the UK, otherwise you will be using many taxi's, trains etc, it used to take me 4 hours to get to Luton which is only 35 miles away, but i had to go into London and out again! (Taxi, train, tube, train, taxi!)

The nightlife is finished at 23:00! Just pubs im afraid, whoever opens a nightclub will be a rich person!

The town is generally a pleasant place to bring up your children, peaceful, good schools, as published in the annual national school reports. plenty of greenery. Lovely villages nearby.
