| Busy Streets (tilt your head!) |
Day One Took a while to get there, as you can expect, but the first impressions of HK are misleading- the quiet, clean, spaceous, frequent tubes then leaving the station to what I though was still indoors but was actually outside. There was low lights everywhere, you couldn't see the sky and the amount of people-think of Oxford Circus on a busy run up to Christmas afternoon then you've got Hong Kong on an average evening. Took ages to find my hostel (HK Budget Hostel 83 Argyle St), just the number of the building was hard to find, then to discover it was a shopping centre and when I asked around people din't seem to know where I was talking about. Luckly one nice shop worker took me to the apartment lifts, away from the shops and I found my way from there. That'll teach me not to print off full directions. Dropped off my bags then went looking for food. Found a good place on Tung Choi St (know as Ladies Market) where I had a veg & seafood coconut curry for under 2 pounds. Couldn't sleep till 4 and that was still like going to bed at 9pm. |
Day two Rained alot, and very warm. Walked down Nathan Road, had some breakfast- all the bread I had was very sweet and all the food fried and greasy. Went to Tin Hau Temple and Temple Street market- discovered Dorian fruit has the ability to make me vomit. Went into Kowloon Park a huge place with outdoor swimming pools an aivary, Chinese gardens, and a sculpture trail. Walked down China Ferry Terminal with great views of Central and took a photo for a couple dressed in full Hawian gear. Then it rained, and rained my shoes stank, and still do three days later. Went to Salisbury Rd in Tsim Cha Tsui and Granville Rd with lots of cheap shops mixed with very expensive ones, well London prices anyway. Went out for dinner with a girl at my hostel- tried a 1000 year old egg, don't recommend it. We went to The Avenue of Stars (a mini Hollywood version with Chinese actors hand prints) with fantastic views of Central all lit up, ready for bed. |

Day three & four Wong Tai Sin Temple- amazing, full of bright pink dragonflys, frogs, turtles, funny man made waterfalls. People lighting joss sticks and praying, offerings to the Gods. Causeway Bay, not impressed- not pedestrian friendly, had to walk miles just to cross a road then couldn't find anything. Though my visit did co-inside with the annual march against the government. Next was Lautau Island and the Po Lin Monestary and the Giant Buddah, not as impressive as the first temple of the day, more expensive and took ages to get to. Went to The Avenue of the Stars (again) to see the daily 8pm light show which was great, each of the big buildings had lasers, fireworks and lit up externally. Day Four Went to Victoria Peak via Peak Tram, big queues to get on but once you got up there was great views. Started to walk all around it but the police had cordened it off so didn't get very far. Just had time to look at the HSBC building and a few others before having to get back to get my plane to Cairns. |
