Deb's travel experiences

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

While traveling to Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. My family made its first stop in Springfield, Illinois. We stopped for a rest period and took a self-tour of Lincoln's tomb. It was very sobering and well worth the visit it is also free! If you have the time be sure to stop and rub Lincoln's nose for good luck!

This is my opinion of the areas I visited at Wisconsin Dells.
1. My family (two boys, ages 6 & 14 and my husband) camped for 3 nights at Sherwood Forest Campground which is right in town and very convenient. It was quiet and has a heated pool. The only drawback is you can't just let the shower water run you have to keep pushing that darn button & when it pops out the water stops & you have to push it again. I had never encountered this but maybe other campgrounds use them?
2. Our first stop was the Tommy Bartlett ski, sky and stage show. The skiers were wonderful. The motorcycles were o.k. but the tumblers and juggler could be replaced with more talented artists.
3. Next up we shopped for souvenirs. It is just your run of the mill tourist trap. T-shirts, keychains, coffee mugs. Nothing to brag about.
4. Earlier in the day we had purchased tickets to ride "Wild Thing" its a jet boat tour of the Upper Dells. It was very informative although you don't get to see "Stand Rock" but if you want to get WET (soaked) then this is the ride for you! It does 360's and nose-dives! It rates a 10 with this family! My kids loved it!
5. Then to supper at Paul Bunyan's! It rates a big ZERO! It is served family style and it all you can eat. We were served some pasta/vegetable alfredo (broccoli) which kids hate. Nasty bbq pork ribs. Fried chicken which was o.k. and my husband paid extra for a very thin slice of prime rib. The potato pancakes were tasteless. It was extremely overpriced. If you wanted something other than water, coffee or milk to drink it was another $1.00 (cash only) and no free refills! Not that anybody bothered to ask if we wanted a refill. The did have homemade bread.
6. Day 2 miniature golf at Pirate's Cove. It was great! and we played game two for half price. They have 5 different courses which vary in skill level.
7. Go-cart rides for the youngest son at Big Chief's Mount Olympus Theme Park. Way overpriced!
8. Then last but not least was the tour of Top-Secret. The one where the White House has landed in Wisconsin Dells upside down! It is a BIG JOKE! The closest thing I can compare it to is a haunted house. Way overpriced! Our local volunteers put on a much better show here at Halloween!
9. Supper at Moose-jaw Pizza & Brewery. They a have much more than pizza. We all four ate something different and didn't walk away hungry like the night before. They have something for everyone. I also bought a shirt with their logo as I am proud to advertise their product!
All in all it wasn't the worst trip I have taken. But I probably won't go back for years. It is more family-friendly than our Branson, Missouri. They have something for all ages. Not just country music wannabees or has been's. Just be forewarned the whole place is a tourist trap. But eat at Moose-Jaw and RIDE THE WILD THING!
