"Secondary Party Central to Okinawa" Okinawa City by olddude
Okinawa City Travel Guide: 18 reviews and 20 photos
I used to live in the village of Okinawa City on Okinawa. The area is know to old-timers as Koza. Most people do not know that the main island of Okinawa is divided into villages each with it's own mayor and city government. The surrounding villages to here are Chatan Town and Kadena Town. Yomitan is also close by. What makes Okinawa City special is that is is the host to Kadena Air Base and the infamous Gate 2 street as well as the also famous .B.C. street (now known as Chuo Park Avenue). Okinawa City is also host to many island-wide special events and concerts to include the annual Orion beer festival and bullfighting. It is a dynamic and vibrant place yet is not nearly as congested or fast moving as Naha; the capital city. Go and visit sometime.
With the opening recently of the new Koza Music Town at the Goya intersection (formerly known as 4-corners) Okinawa City is trying to embrace it's former heritage and name of Koza City. They want to try and change image of Gate 2 street to be less wild and have more cultural events to ply more tourists away from Naha and the resorts.
Okinawa City, which has a number of popular eisa and local folk dances, hopes to intertwine the traditional sounds with that of rock and roll bands, including Okinawa’s Orange Range Band. There are many new restaurants and coffee houses in the area too that feature live music of all kinds some nights. There is even a new Wendy's Restaurant in the area.
- Pros:close to everything
- Cons:none really

As a flea market addict, the Hamby Town night market sounds rather intriguing. The next time I find myself in Okinawa City, I will make sure to check it out.
For a good understanding of Okinawa City's past, read "B.C. Street" available on amazon.com or visit: www.okinawa-bcstreet.com.
Hi Al, i hadn't seen the Okinawa City pages...thanks for pointing them out. I especially liked the info on typhoons there and the local's handling of them. Tracey
The japonese never take Okinawa seriously which is a real pety because I am sure that is the place where the ebaches RULES in Japan, am I right?:)
Excellent page! And as it is Sunday morning now, Rose Garden seems just like the place to be :-)
If you really want good Thai food, try Som Chai just off of BC Street (Park Avenue). If you enter BC off of 330, it is down the first walking street on the left (the brick road). Amazing food and atmosphere.
Greetings from Cape Breton. I enjoyed your Okinawa tips: very practical and helpful. Cheers!
