Tallin is simply a wonderful, memorable city to visit.
Bustling, friendly and compact, it is full of medieval splendor that charms and captivates - yet it is also very modern.
Best of all is the Old Town with it's fairytale spires and winding cobbled streets all encircled by the imposing and strikingly well-preserved medieval city walls.
Tallin is a city that is on the up in every single way. Estonia gained independence from the USSR in 1991 and joined the EU in January 2004. Dubbed as the 'Baltic tiger', new investment is pouring into the country. This is refelected in Tallin's dynamic and vibrant feel.
By day or night this is simply a beautiful city to be in.
Life in the city
But despite this, the city is relatively inexpensive by British & European standards.
Eating out should cost an average of around 500 to 700 EEK (20-30 pounds) for two people with drinks.
The variety of food on offer matches that of any thriving, diverse city. You can take your pick from Traditional Estonian, Greek, Italian, Mexican, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Eastern European - just about anything that springs to mind.
The airport is a mere 3kms from the city centre (70 EEK or 3 pounds by taxi) and the port is literally a stone's throw (or 10 minute) walk away.
With the EasyJet starting flights in late 2004, it is easy to see it becoming as popular as Prague.
Tallin is a compact and easily walkable city.
The Old Town is the heart of the city and all the most interesting sights are within or close-by.
The streets in the Old Town are cobbled and there are some fairly steep little lanes up to Toompea hill - so practical shoes are a must!
This page is a work in progress but, hopefully, the tips that I have prepared below will be helpful in making the most of your visit.
I have specifically written them from a Brit's abroad point-of-view.
Estonians are lovely if quite reserved people. They happen to live in a beautiful country with a somewhat turbulent past.
This is a party town in summer but please do us proud and behave yourself when you are out there !!
- Pros:It's lovely and lively
- Cons:D'you know, I can't think of any !
- In a nutshell:Charming, fun, inexpensive
