The temple of Abu Simbel is one of the very important ancient monuments of Egypt. Personally i would think that this is one of the most magnificent work i saw in Egypt.
It's built by Ramses II for the sun god, Re-Harakhte, Amun, Ptah and himself, the defied pharoah.
The impressive and 3D colossol statues that you see on top are none other than the great pharoah himself, Ramses the II.
It's carved out of the mountain, and if you look closely, you would see his family members (tiny statues by his legs).
Now, to give you a very good idea how huge these statues are, look closely for me, standing on the bottom right hand side..... see that?
Yup that's me! From my egyptian tour guide, we undestand that these majestive statues sits at 69 ft high.
One cannot take pictures inside the temple. But you can take video though.
Once you enter the temple, you would be greeted by 8 large Osiride figures of Ramses which support the roof. The walls are beautiful, filled with reliefs. Telling you stories of the glory of this pharoah. |
| A Tribute by Ramses to Queen Nefertari |
| | Temple of Hathor The smaller temple at the Abu Simbel is the rock-cut Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the Chief wife of Ramses the II, Queen Nefertari.
She was the most beloved of the wives of Ramses.
You would see four statues that represent Ramses while the other two represent Nefertari. Each about 10m high. |
