Beautiful but not as expensive as Portofino. Santa Margherita Ligure is very clean and well cared for. There are several free public beaches and piers for swimming.

Portofino from the harbor

There is ferry service to Portofino many times each day and in the evening as well, but only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The town is small and easy to see on foot. It's a stopover for cruises and many expensive designer shops are here. (The cruise ships anchor in the gulf as the harbor is too small for them.)

San Fruttuoso from the sea

Once again you can come by ferry from Portofino or Santa Margherita. You can also hike for about 2 hours from Portofino.
The restored buildings of the ancient abbey on the shore are beautiful, definitely worth a visit. You can swim on the tiny public or private beach. The water is cool and very clean.
