  • There are 2 ways to see Chinatown.
One way is on your own. A nice 2 hour walk would do fine. You could shop and eat for a low price. (stay away from the camera/electronics shops)

The second way is by walking tour, which I would recommend. You can't understand Chinatown without learning the history. Did you know that there are underground passages and opium houses? Don't get ripped off by a $40 tour. Try this www.walkingtourssf.com and check out their Chintown tours there only $15.

    Alcatraz: The Rock
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alcatraz is one of the most popular tourist sites in San Francisco. It is visited by more than 1.5 million tourists a year. I've lived here all my life and have never visited Alcatraz until tonight! I always thought of it as a cheesy tourist location. Tonight I went with a bunch of friends, to one of the new evening tours. It's much less crowded and it is limited to about 200 people.

The evening tour is much different then the daytime one. For starters you have a "real" tour guide as soon as you arrive at the island. You have s self guided cell block tour. What's really different is that they have evening programs and demonstrations not offered in the daytime. We were even able to coax a Park Officer to take us to the underground tunnels... Everything is much more personal and you don't have that "tourist feeling" like those who go one the daytime venture.

Buy your tickets in advance, at least a week ahead. www.blueandgoldfleet.com
Wear a lot of clothing it gets real cold! You will see the most beautiful sunset so bring your camera too. The island is a breeding ground for birds... A lot of poop! My friend grabbed a hand rail today and got a big glob of it. You can only bring water on the island but there is food and drink on the boat to and from.

Summary: see the prison island at night, you will not regret it.

Hi there, about slave girls and China Town history, have you read 'Portrait in Sepia' by Isabel Allende? A beautiful and painful story... And nice name by the way, 'altizachen'...Enjoy your travels!
