I was with a good friend I had been pen pals with for over 5 years. She is a special person and as we were walking one evening, a little girl came up with flowers. I of course wanted to buy some for my friend. I got two. BAD IDEA! My friend quickly explained that in Ukraine, to give an even number of flowers is to show grief for a bad thing happening. Remember, a happy occasion is always shown in odd numbers. I hurried to buy a third flower and the little girl was happy!
ALSO. When exchanging American dollars it is very important to have very ultra crisp, new and undamaged bills. They are very picky about what bills they accecpt. And the lower denominations are harder to exchange, don't even think about trying a single dollar. A guide book said that a one makes a good tip, but if you, even as a local person couldn't exchange it for anything then it's not very good is it? Very crisp, new smelling 50's and 100's are what work the best.
