The Land of the Gods

Land of Beauty

Rijks Museum in Amsterdam
Amsterdam. What an amazing city. I had not really done any research on Amsterdam before I visited for a long weekend while I was working in Germany. But I was enthralled the moment I began wandering the cobblestone streets, over the canals, past the interesting doorways, the rows and rows of bikes, to the Museumplein.

The Van Gogh and Rijks Museums were amazing places to visit. So was the Anne Frank House. History. Spiritual. Art. Combined to make a wonderful day of education, entertainment, and enjoyment.

At night, a visit to the Red Light District completed the weekend adventure, and the Amsterdam experience. Was it worth it? Sure, why not. But it wasn't all that. I was just surprised at how young the girls were, and how yucky the men were seeking those girls.

One of the things I really enjoyed about Amsterdam was that I felt short. I'm almost 6 ft 1-inch tall, so to feel short in the land of Gods was a heavenly experience. The tall beautiful people we encountered at bars and dance clubs was lovely. Especially gazing at the men.
One of my themes: Doorways

Cuisine

I don't remember the cuisine in Amsterdam as vividly as in Germany. I do remember the white beer with lemon that I consumed everywhere. And the croquettes that were often served as appetizers, lunch or dinner. And we had some yummy cream of tomatoe soup, ciabatta bread, and baked goat cheese with thyme and honey for breakfast one day at a cafe on one of the canals. Oh, and the schwarmas we ate every night at 4 am as we stumbled home from our evening out. It was all good, but I wasn't there long enough to be amazed by the food; only everything else.

Wonderful page on Amsterdam. You took me right back to my visit in 1970. I've always intended to return but the last two attempts have missed. On my suggestion my daughter visited last year and shares your opinion of the city.
