Niguliste Church behind Town Fortifications

Old Town

The Old Town is well preserved with city walls and ancient churches well intact. Since joining the EU, Tallin has seen a boom in construction/restoration. It only takes a day or two to get a good look at the market square and old churches in this part of the city. You'll find the people very friendly and the food delicious. A big surprise is that there are a couple of parks with wireless internet access...the sign says to accomodate students and acedemics in the area.

Defense

Walls like the one seen here show how arches played a role in Baltic arcitecthure. The picture doesn't quite capture the thickness of the wall (several feet) which is the primay reason it was built. With the towers surrounding Old Town, the city wall was vital to keeping raiders out. The photo does highlight the easy access travellers have when they visit. City officials have done a magnificent job creating an up close and personal experience for visitors.
Niguliste Church

City of Churches

Niguliste Church is only one example of the five or six incredible monuments of faith in on Old Town-Tallin. The best part about these churches is that they are all very different with influences from most significant pre-Victorian styles. You also get a chance to see how these different faiths viewed displays of art and wealth.

Pros:"The people and the access make this a very enjoyable couple of days."
Cons:"If you're looking for a week's worth of adventure you probably should make this part of a larger vacation."
In A Nutshell:"Would love to go back as part of another Baltic trip but probably not enough for a stand alone vacation."
